Tardy Policy

Each student at Eisenhower Middle School is responsible for being prompt to all classes.

1. Each staff member is responsible for observing and recording tardiness to his/her class. Students tardy for class are not to be sent to the attendance office or main office for a pass. The teacher must document tardies in his/her gradebook and follow tardy steps. (See below). Any student arriving late to school must check-in at with the attendance secretary with a parent and/or a note and obtain an admit slip prior to going to class.

2. Only unexcused tardies will be counted and apply to the procedures in the policy. An EXCUSED TARDY is one in which the student has been detained and excused by a staff member or parent causing him to be late to class. The student is responsible for getting the excused pass and presenting it to the teacher for whom he is tardy. Any tardy that is not excused will be counted as unexcused.

3. If teachers notice chronic excused (parent excused) tardies, a contact should be made to appropriate grade-level administrator.

4. Unexcused tardies will be accumulated on a semester basis per class. At the conclusion of the semester the count of the number of unexcused tardies for each student will begin again in each class.

5. Steps to follow in tardy policy:

FIRST TARDY: Teacher should discuss tardiness with the student in a one to one conference. The student's responsibility for promptness should be emphasized. Consequences for future tardiness including possible LUNCH DETENTION and IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION should be explained.

SECOND TARDY: Parent contact by the teacher is expected by the second tardy. Parents must be made aware of lunch detention and S.O.S. (Student on Suspension) possibilities.

THIRD TARDY: Teacher should apply a consequence for a student who receives a third unexcused tardy. Teacher may determine the consequence. Examples are: before or after school detention or a written assignment. Reminder: if detention is used, a parent must be notified in advance.

FOURTH AND SUBSEQUENT TARDIES: Student should be referred to the office for consequences, provided all previous steps have been followed. Teacher must complete and submit Student Referral Form.

Consequences from administrators:

4 tardies = 4 days of lunch detention

5 tardies = 8 days of lunch detention

6 tardies = 1 day SOS or equivalent detention and parent contact

6. Teachers may not keep an entire class after the bell for any reason. Students are to be given the entire passing period in order to give them a fair opportunity to accept this responsibility.

7. Administrators and counselors are available to help teachers work with unusual student problems.
