Fire Drills

1. At the sound of the alarm everyone, including cafeteria personnel, is to evacuate the building immediately. Teachers are asked to remind students to clear the building quickly and in an orderly manner. Please do not have the students return to the building until the all-clear signal, which is three long bells, is given.
2. When leaving the building, teachers are asked to take their grade books or class lists and to call roll when they arrive at the designated spot where their class is to line up. Classes should line up at a safe distance from the building in a double file line and face the building. Students should not carry books or excess clothing out of the building.
3. All windows and doors of the classroom should be closed by room marshalls or the teacher, whoever is designated to be the last person to leave the building.
4. Students in lavatories should join the nearest line of exit. Certain teachers and/or students should be assigned on a permanent basis to check the restrooms for stragglers.
5. Fire drill instructions should be posted in a conspicuous place in each classroom. Teachers are asked to discuss fire drill exit procedures with each class. If a fire drill occurs at lunch time, students are asked to report to the spot where their 4th period class usually meets. If a fire alarm sounds during passing period, students are asked to report to the outside spot which has been designated by their next period teacher.
6. Fire drills will be staged at unannounced times during the course of the school year. There will be one fire drill a week during the first month of the school year, and after that, one fire drill a month.
7. Teachers are asked to remind their students not to tamper with the fire alarm stations. Any alarm that is pulled can lead to a referral to the state Fire Marshall's office for legal action. This will also automatically trigger a suspension from Eisenhower Middle School. Please stress the necessity of this action with your students.
8. When the fire alarm sounds, certain teachers, whose rooms are near fire alarm stations, will be asked to check the station to ascertain if the alarm has been pulled. If it has, he/she is asked to report that information to the main office.
9. Students should not be evacuated to the faculty parking lot.
