Emergency Dismissal

EMERGENCY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
The purpose of this directive is to provide a systematic and orderly procedure for school dismissal before the normally scheduled dismissal time. Power failures, gas leaks, and plumbing problems are examples of situations which may necessitate early school dismissal. In the event that such an emergency should occur, the principal is responsible for taking certain actions as outlined below. This is assuming that there is sufficient time to take such actions; common sense and the principal's best judgment should prevail in an emergency situation.
1. The principal will call the appropriate Buildings and Grounds Department, alert the supervisor, and ask for immediate assistance. The Buildings and Grounds supervisor will dispatch personnel to the school and will notify the Associate Superintendent for Business and Operations.
2. The principal will call the appropriate level Assistant Superintendent, after consultation with the Associate Superintendent for Business and Operations, and will make the decision as to whether or not school will be dismissed. The level Assistant Superintendent will also notify the Transportation Office. The Security Office, the Public Information Office, the Deputy Superintendents, and the Superintendent regarding the situation.
3. The Public Information Office will notify the media of an early dismissal due to an emergency.
4. If the emergency conditions which prompted the early dismissal threaten the health and safety of school employees, employees shall complete their duty day at an alternate district location, if such is available.
If the emergency situation cannot be resolved in a timely manner, and the school will not be open the following day, the Associate Superintendent for Business and Operations shall notify the Public Information Office, the appropriate level Assistant Superintendent, and the Superintendent.
EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
When an emergency situation occurs, the safety of our students, staff and community will be our first priority. The administration will follow all district, city, and state procedures to assure that safety is achieved. After the emergency has been rectified and all of the necessary procedures have been completed a memo will go to the staff and a note to students and parents explaining the situation.
Your cooperation with following all directions as promptly and accurately as possible will help. Also, please refrain from telling students that after a certain amount of time they will be dismissed. The district policy is to not send elementary or middle school students home because of the supervision issue. Therefore, unless the emergency is at a level which dictates dismissal, the administration will utilize options which keep our students safely at school.
Thanks for your help, patience and understanding in these situations.
