Little Red Riding Hood And Some Science Lessons, Too
By Brittany Butler, 8th-Grade Student
Once upon a time there lived a little girl in a cottage. Her name was Little Red Riding Hood. One day, her mother told her that Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother was sick. Grandma didn't liver very far away so Red told her mom that she would take a basket of goodies for her. Red started right away because she watned her grandma to feel better as soon as possible. Just as her house was disappearing from sight, a big wolf came walking along the path.
"Hello," he said stopping to greet her.
"Hello," Red rpelied smiling.
"Where are you heading with such a big basket of goodies?"
"I'm going to my sick grandmother's house to make her feel better. My mom sent me with this basket."
"Well then, I have an idea. How about we have a race?" The clever wolf, being famished, just wanted to beat Little Red Riding Hood to the grandma's house and eat her. Quicklyi n his head, since he was so smart, he gifured out which way would be fasters. 'Let's see,' he thought, 'The cottage is about 500 meters away if yout ake the farthers path and Little Red Riding Hood walks at about a speed of 1.5 meters per second. Now if you divide 500 meters by 1.5 then you get 333.3, if you round that to 300 seconds and divide that by 60 seconds, you get 5.55! Therefore she'll take about five and a half minutes to get there.' He simled to himself.
"I'll go this way, and you take the other. We'll see who gets to your grandma's house faster, all right?" he asked grinning to himself.
"Sounds fair," Little Red Riding Hood shrugged. So they both started, Little Red Riding Hood skipping amon the flowers and the wolf darting down the other path, in a mad dash to his meal. Then, not far into the race and in his scramble to beat Red, the wolf trippin on a tree root and fell to the ground. Then, all of a sudden, Mr. Brugge stepped out from behind a tree.
"How, you're asking did our dear firend the wolf fall with such a great speed?" he asked taking precautions so as not to step on the wolf.
"Well," Mr. Brugge continued, "The math is quite simple. To find out the acceleration of which the wolf fell, you just have to first find out how far he fell," Mr. Brugge pulled a tape measure out of his pocket like it was just something he carried around with him. He instructed the confused wolf to stand up again so he could measure the distance from the wolf to the ground.
"The distance, in this case is four feet. Now, Mr. Wolf, would you please re-enact the fall for us?" Mr. Brugge asked.
"Are you crazy? I'm not going to fall on purpose, I'm wasting precious eating time here!" So since the wolf wasn't illing to cooperate, Mr. Brugge shoved him to the ground.
"All right, 1.7 seconds!" He shouted excitedly revealing the stopwatch he was holding.
"Where are you getting all of this?"
"I'm a science teacher, I'm always prepared." Mr. Brugge smiled, "So, the math after that to find the variable 'x' is to divide the distance by time! Our answer is 2.4 feet per seconds! Wasn't that fun?" He asked and left just as fast as he had come waving goodbye as he went.
"That was random," the wolf said getting to his feet from where Mr. Brugge had pushed him. "But, I can't waste anymore time, I have to beat Red!" he said brushing himself off. He started jogging off towards Grandma's house again, this time more carefully so he wouldn't fall again.
Meanwhile, Little Red Riding Hood was having a great time picking flowers and looking at the birds and taking care not to step on any bugs.
"Mr. Wolf is a nice guy," she remarked to herself watching a robin chirping up in his tree. "But he almost seemed creepy about wanting to race me," Suddenly the thought struck her that the wolf was going to Grandma's to eat her! Red started racing down the path, this time stepping on many bugs but she didn't care, she had to save her grandma! She practically ran into her Grandma's white picket fence as she came to a stop. She caustiously stepped up to the door and knocked on it.
"Who is it?" a voice called from insde.
"It's me, Little Red Riding Hood,"
"Come on in, the door's unlocked," Little Red Riding Hood opened the door and stepped inside the dark house. She went to her Grandma's room where a figure was lying in the bed. It was so dark, she could hardly make out who it was.
"Well, hello there," the voice said gently. Little Red Riding Hood sighed in relief, if it had been the wolf, he would have already eaten her, but Grandma sounded just fine, considering she was sick.
"My mom sent me with this basket of goodies for you, to make you feel better," she said.
"Isn't that sweet?" Grandma asked, "Come, sit down for awhile," Little Red Riding Hood pulled up a chair by the bedisde and put the basket down on the little table in the corner. Even though most of her fears about the wolf had passed and she was thinking that maybe he did just want to race her for fun, she made out her 'Grandma's' eyes that looked big and yellow.
"My Grandma, what big eyes you have," she said.
"Yes, the better to see you with,"
"Were they always like that?" Little Red inquired.
"Well-no, but I, uh you know how it is when you're sick," Grandma stuttered.
"Right. Well, what big ears you have,"
"The better to hear you with,"
"Uh huh, sure Grandma," Little Red Riding Hood said relaizing that the wolf was just an evil thing that that had already eaten her Grandma and was planning to do the same to her.
"And let me ask you, Grandma," she started as she tot up and headed for the door. "Since when did you have fangs?" She asked reaching for the lightswitch. The wolf, who had started trying to hide himself in teh covers, was revealed as soon as Red turend the light on and could finally see the wolf plain and clear.
"You're a quick girl, you know that?" he growled tossing the covers to the side.
"Oh, I'm not quick, but there's nothing faster than the speed of light!"
"What?!" the wolf asked, who had been expecting her to run away from him.
"Well, since I was realizing it was you, I got up and started for the light. You were trying to cover youself up but light travels at 299,790 kilometers a second, so you couldn't have hid yourself in that amount of time!" Little Red Riding Hood cried triumphantly.
"Well, that doesn't matter," the owlf said getting up and advancing in Little Red, "I'm still hungry and I'm goig to eat yoU!" Little Red Riding Hood started screaming for help when allof a sudden, Mr. Brugge came in again!
"Wow, you know if you want to, Mr. Wolf, you could figure out the speed of Little Red Riding Hood's screams and shrieks!" He exclaimed patting the wolf on the back.
"Enough science!" the owlf shouted and ran out of the house downt he dirt path.
"Well, it just goes to show you taht you should never talk to giant man eating wolves," Little Red said smiling.
"Or, that science can save your life!" Mr. Brugge grinned. Little Red Riding Hood just sighed and laughed a little to herself knowing that if he ever made their third period class write a fairytale including science lessons, she'd know exactly what to write about!!!
