Galileo Galilei and the Three Discoveries

By Alicia Burton, 8th-Grade Student

Once there was a family of discoveries-Telescope, Rings of Saturn, and Pendulum- who lived in the middle of a science lab. This morning they decided to have breakfast together. Telescope wanted a bowl of lenses, Rings of Saturn wanted a bowl of rock and debris, and Pendulum wanted a bowl of strings. However, this morning their meals were not quite right. The lenses were cracked, the rock and debris were too hard to chew, and the strings were tangled up in knots. So the discoveries decided to do some experiments in the lab while waiting for their meals to settle.

While the discoveries were gone a young boy named Galileo Galilei was walking in the lab and spotted the little house. When Galileo knocked no one answered, so he pushed open the second-class lever and let himself in.

When Galileo walked in he saw the three bowls sitting on the table and decided that he would have a bit to eat.

"Ouch!" he said after biting into the lenses and almost cutting his lip. "This won't work."

Next, Galileo thought he would try the second bowl.

"These are too hard to chew," said Galileo after trying the bowl of rock and debris, and he started to become very angry.

After the first two meals didn't satisfy him he was a little hesitant to go on to the third bowl, but he did anyway.

"Mmm, this tastes like spaghetti," he said after trying the bowl of strings and he ate the whole meal.

After eating, Galileo had become very tired, so he went to find somewhere to rest. He walked into a room where there were three places to sleep. First, he went over to the first bed and looked at it with wonder in his eyes.

"How am I supposed to sleep on this?" he said looking at the stand by the window.

Unsatisfied, he went over to an empty space with stars on the walls.

"Where is the bed?" he asked himself.

Finally, he walked over to an area that was surrounded by a brass gate and in the middle of that was a blanket. Galileo climbed over the gate and cuddled up in the blanket.

"Ahh!" Galileo said and he fell fast asleep.

Little did he know the three hungry discoveries were on their way home.

"What happened here?" said Telescope looking at his bowl of lenses, which were covered in saliva.

"Somebody has tried to eat my rock and debris," said Rings of Saturn looking down at her bowl.

Pendulum was looking down at his empty bowl and was about to cry.

"Who did this!" he said with a tear falling down his brass ball.

The three angry discoveries decided that they would take a nap and eat after they woke up.

When the three discoveries walked into their bedroom, gravity pulled their bottom jaws down so their mouths were wide open.

"Somebody moved my stand," Telescope said.

"Somebody smeared my stars," said Rings of Saturn. "Now I have no where to sleep."

"Somebody climbed my gate and slept in my blanket," said Pendulum. "And they're still there."

Suddenly Galileo woke up and saw the three discoveries, who were standing over him. Surprised, he jumped up and ran out of the house.

"Well, I guess we know who ate our meals and trashed our beds," the three discoveries said at once.
