Mrs. Kathy Laycock, Health Assistant

A professional school nurse, Sally Hunter, RN, is available daily to care for students. Her phone number is 291-6876. APS has a trained staff to enroll qualifying students into Medicaid. If you have questions concerning the qualifications needed to enroll please contact the nurse. Parents should contact the nurse about any health problems that might reflect on student performance. Lastly parents should also notify the Health Office of boosters administered so that immunization records may be kept current.

In the event that a student becomes ill or injured at school, he/she should report to the health office for care and observation. The parent/guardian will be called if a student complains of illness or injury and requests to go home. The parent will also be notified if a student is ill or injured and it appears that further treatment is necessary. The nurse or health assistant will call the parent to pick up the student. Emergency numbers are used in an emergency situation, when the parent(s) cannot be reached, or when the student is ill and it has been determined that the parent(s) cannot be reached.

If your child has surgery or an illness that causes a long-term absence, the nurse can coordinate information and schoolwork between the parent and teacher. Home Hospital can also be arranged if the child will be out of school 3 weeks or longer. Please contact the nurse’s office as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made.

IMMUNIZATION REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

ATTENTION INCOMING 7TH GRADERS: Hepatits B immunizations become a requirement as you enter your 7th-grade year. The school must have a copy of your Hepatits B shots if they have been done. If you are starting Hepatitis B, you need to be current and bring in the record you have so far. To be current means you have started the series and you do not need another shot in August. The completed record can be mailed to Eisenhower before fall registration. You cannot get your schedule until we have record of your hepatitis B immunizations. Before registering at Eisenhower, students need to be current on their immunizations or annual exemption.

The state requirement is for 4 DTP’s or DtaP”s, one dose being after the age of 4 and also within the past 10 years. 4 polio’s are recommended, one dose after the age of 4, but 3 polio doses are required. 1 MMR is required, a second MMR is recommended. Hepatitis B is required of all 7th graders. If you have any questions please call our office. If you need information about a clinic to receive theses immunizations please call or email the nurse’s office.

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

A nationwide shortage of tetanus and diptheria toxoids (Td) in the United States developed when one manufacturer quit producing the serum. This shortage affects students and adults who should be getting a Td booster which is done every 10 years after the primary series. There is an adequate supply of diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis serum (DtaP) which is given to children 7 years and under. The shortage will last approximately one year and this means that routine immunization of students for Td is delayed until supplies are adequate.

The use of Td for vaccination of individuals with wounds, planning foreign travel, who are pregnant, or who have not completed the primary tetanus series should receive the Td booster. New Mexico Healthcare Offices have supplies for the above purposes. If you have any question about the delay or any immunization please feel free to call the health office or come in and visit with me.

Hepatitis B becomes a requirement when a student enters 7th grade. Next year at 2001 registration it will also become a requirement for entering Kindergarten. The Hepatitis B immunization is a series of three and takes 6 months to complete. Students over the age of 11 may be able to receive a two dose hepatitis series if their healthcare provider has the vaccine. This takes 4 months to complete. The record for the shots needs to be brought to the school on the day of registration for the student to be able to register but it can be mailed or brought into the nurse’s office at any time during the school year. Please plan ahead and have your student ready for the requirement. We will provide hepatitis B immunizations at the school for 6th graders. Please watch for a letter, which will be sent to all students who do not show the series on their immunization records giving more information on the clinic. The permission form will be mailed with this information. Again, if you have questions please contact the nurse.
