3. Imagine you are the science officer on the USS Brügge, the finest starship in the fleet. Captain Queeg, not the brightest captain in the fleet, has ordered the crew to go on a training mission on Earth. While practicing maneuvers over the Himalayas, the ship crashes.

All communication gear is broken; you and the crew are lost. The captain has ordered you to determine your elevation. You vaguely remember a lab from middle-school science where one's elevation is related to the boiling point of H2O. (Note: 1°C lower for each 293m you go up from sea level.)

With your hand that was not broken during the crash, please write a report for Captain Queeg in which you detail what your current elevation is.

Your report should include the following:

* An explanation of how you carried out the experiment

* Samples of your data

* An answer for the captain

1. This will be a question that is taken directly from the Galileo lecture--be sure you have your notes. (10 pts.)

3. The USS Brügge has been repaired after the crash in the Himalayas. Captain Queeg has been cleared of responsibility for the mishap by Starfleet Command. The ship has been sent out on a test run.

In the middle of hyperspace, the Hamiltonometer failed, and the ship dropped out of hyperspace and crashed on an alien world. You are, once again, truly lost.

Captain Queeg has ordered you as the science officer to determine the acceleration of gravity on this unknown world. You need to know your answer within 3.5% in order to know how much fuel and thrust are needed to escape the pull of the planet's gravity.

Please write a report for Captain Queeg. It should include the following:

* A brief description of how you plan to carry out your experiment

* Samples of your data; be sure also to tell how many total trials were run

* A sample calculation showing how you found the acceleration

* Explain in detail how confident you feel about your answer.
