Cindy
By Terri Kurtz, 8th-Grade Student
Once upon a time, there was a young lady named Cindy. Cindy lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters in a little trashy cottage which was located 4,354 meters west of the Kingdom of the Flair. When Cindy was 6 months old her mother died, so a few months later, Cindy's father married Taylor Hurt, who had to daughters of her own. When Cindy was 16, her father died in a car accident. Now Cindy is 18. Her stepmother doesn't have a job and her stepsisters have never had boyfriends. Taylor, Cindy's stepmother, treated Cindy very badly and forced her to work four jobs so the mortgage on the cottage could be paid and so Taylor's darling daughters could stuff their faces whenever they were hungry.
Cindy woke up every morning, long before the earth rotated and when the temperature was only 6 degrees Celsius. Cindy woke up, dragged her tired feet out from under the nice 27 degree Celsius covers, got dressed, combed her hair with an old, broken hair brush, and put on her torn tennis shoes. She would walk like a snail and create static electricity by scuffing her thin cloth shoes against her stepmother's pink, shag carpet, which covered the small living room's floor. She would quietly inch across the room and go to the squeaky wooden door. Every morning she would touch the door knob, and a static shock would make her half open eyes flinch. She would slowly walk 1.6 meters per second to McDonald's which was a 15 minute walk away. The long 1,440 meter walk seemed like many miles to the tired Cindy. When she reached McDonald's she got into her uniform and tended the 192 degrees Celsius (because oil needs to be hotter than boiling water to food fry) French fry oil. After watching the oil for 180 minutes, Cindy would change into her normal clothes then go to her next job at Bloomingdales which she ran to at 3 meters per second and arrived at the 360 meter distance after 2 minutes of running. After folding clothes for 120 minutes, Cindy would go back to her neighbor's house 1,089 meters away. It would take her 13 minutes to get there because she was tired and walking at a speed of about 1.4 meters per second.
At her neighbor's house Cindy would work and do tasks like laundry and cleaning for 120 minutes then she would go 205 meters west to Mr. Kroger's farm where she would milk his cows and collect the chicken eggs for sale at the country market. Cindy would stay at Mr. Kroger's for 60 minutes, then she would walk slowly, her feet aching, back to her house 214 meters away. It would take her about 44 minutes to get back to her stepmother and stepsisters because she was traveling 0.08 meters a second. When she reached the trashy cottage, she would sigh, and slowly enter through the squeaky entrance door. Before she could set one foot inside, Cindy's evil stepmother would grab her by the ear and lecture her about being late. But today, something weird happened. While Cindy opened the door she mentally prepared herself for yet another beating, but she when the door swung open no one was there to yell at her. Cindy suspiciously walked onto the pink shag rug and slammed the door behind her to see if Taylor would come out and lecture her. But nothing happened. Cindy, who was confused at this change, strolled into her stepmother's bedroom. There, Cindy's cruel stepsisters and Taylor were putting n make up in front of Taylor's jewel-trimmed mirror. Helen and Shelby, Cindy's stepsisters, were attempting to suck in their stomachs and put on elegant blue photon reflecting and indigo photon reflecting dresses. "Where were you, darling?" sweetly asked Taylor. Cindy didn't respond because she knew something wasn't right.
"Well, I'm sorry to inform you, but your sisters and I are going to a ball tonight in the Kingdom of Flair. Prince Slick is now 18, so he's asking all the women in the kingdom and suburbs to come to the palace, so he can choose a bride. If you would have arrived earlier we would have invited you, but you don't have enough time to prepare. The taxi will be here in five minutes, and we still have to do our hair, so go amuse yourself and be a good girl while we finish up."
Cindy was speechless. She had never been to a dance in her whole life and she would never get to see the castle. She sadly left Taylor's room and collapsed onto the couch, which reflected orange photons. Cindy heard the taxi pull up into the drive way, but she didn't have the energy to move and tell Taylor, Helen, and Shelby.
"Cindy!!!" shrieked Helen. "Was that the taxi?!"
"Yeah," mumbled Cindy, her head buried under a pillow.
The three awful women, all dressed and looking like idiots, giggled and sped across the living room. Each of them shocked their hand on the door knob as they left the house because they dragged their feet across the pink shag carpet.
Cindy heard the door slam and she started to cry. Suddenly, Cindy heard a loud thump on the roof. She gasped and ran outside to see what it was. There, sitting on the roof, was a woman dressed in a violet photon reflecting dress. The woman was holding a gold stick and she had wings attached to her back.
"Hello down there! Gravity really does a number on one's back end. It pulls you down at 9.8 meters per second per second, ya' know. I was probably about 200 meters in the sky, so It was a huge impact when I hit this roof, " said the elderly woman standing up and dusting herself off.
She walked to the edge of the roof then jumped, traveling at 9.8 meters per second per second, it didn't take her very long to hit the ground.
"So, you must be Cindy. I'm Gloria. I just happen to be your fairy godmother. Let's see, you wanted to go to the dance. You'll need a dress, a carriage, horses, and a driver. Oh! How could I have forgotten!? You'll need shoes, too."
Cindy stood in complete shock not knowing what to do or to say. The woman strolled around looking for something. She spotted a pumpkin, pointed her stick at it, then whispered. The pumpkin became a white, all photon reflecting carriage with a beautiful silver door and silver wheels. The woman saw a mouse, she pointed her stick at it, and whispered. Then the little gray rodent turned into a man with a black, all photon absorbing jacket, and a white mustache. Gloria changed two other mice into huge white horses. She pointed her stick at Cindy and whispered. Cindy spun quickly in little circles, her feet creating friction against the asphalt. Cindy stopped spinning, she looked down and saw that she was wearing a lovely yellow photon reflecting dress. Gloria pointed at Cindy's thin shoes , closed her eyes, and whispered. Cindy's torn up shoes turned into glass high heels.
"Okay, Cindy, you need to be back here by ten o'clock, or the spell will wear off while you're at the palace. Have fun, but remember what I said." Gloria waved enthusiastically at Cindy as Cindy, still in a daze, jumped into the white carriage.
The driver, ordered the horses to go, and Cindy was on her way to the castle.
They were traveling 8 meters a second so it only took about 8 minutes to arrive at the castle, which was 4,354 meters away .
Cindy was amazed at the size of the huge, rock-made skyscraper. The driver opened the silver door for her and she eagerly stepped out. "I will get to dance and have fun!" thought Cindy happily.
I took her 0.77 seconds to hear the orchestra from 200 meters inside of the castle. The music traveled at 258 meters per second and it was a glorious sound for Cindy to hear. She excitedly walked up the elegant steps leading to the entrance of Prince Slick's castle. She opened the huge entrance door, and the music stopped playing. Everyone stopped dancing. They all turned around and stared at the embarrassed Cindy. Prince Slick watched the wide-eyed Cindy close the doors and smile nervously as everyone watched. He let go of his dance partner's hands and ran to Cindy. He kneeled in front of her, took her hand and kissed it. The whole audience mumbled at the flirtatious sight.
"Will you dance with me, ma'ma?" he asked Cindy sweetly while standing up. She blushed and nodded enthusiastically.
The audience laughed, and the music started playing again as the prince and Cindy joined hands for a salsa dance.
"My name is Albert Slick. I'm 18, and I'm having this dance to look for a wife," he said while dipping Cindy back.
"That's cool," said Cindy, whose cheeks were still rose-colored.
"Do you know what else is cool?" asked the charming Prince Albert Slick. "For every 292.6 meters you get above sea level the boiling point of water drops one degree Celsius. Water can't get any hotter than its boiling point. Objects that are different weights fall at exactly the same speed. They both fall at 9.8 meters per second per second. The bigger the lever you have the less work you have to do to lift something. A spinning top creates friction. A pendulum continues to swing because of kinetic energy. Different types of light produce different proportions of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Sound travels at about 300 meters per second. A pendulum, dropping objects, and dripping water can demonstrate gravity quite accurately. A scatter plot graph can give you any point with the equation y=mx+b. All magnets have a north and south pole. Opposite poles attract. Light moves 299,790 kilometers a second in a vacuum. Thunder comes after lightning because sound is slower than light." Prince Slick continued to ramble on and on about physics facts, and after about fifteen minutes of listening to him say such random things, Cindy stopped dancing and walked away towards the punch bowl.
"I wanted him to talk about us, not physics," Cindy said quietly to herself while pouring herself a glass of punch. A man standing nearby heard Cindy talking to herself.
"Wanted to tell you about physics, didn't he?" asked the man laughing. "Yeah. I don't think a ball is the best setting for a physics lecture, though," said Cindy in a disappointed voice.
"Before you came, Prince Slick, over there, was boring every woman he danced with. Hey, it's a minute until ten o'clock, what do you say we leave here and go get some coffee? You're Cindy, right. I'm Allen, I live down the street from you."
"No, I can't get coffee, Allen! My fairy Godmother said..." but before Cindy could finish her sentence the clock struck ten, and Cindy's beautiful yellow photon reflecting dress turned back into rags. She started to cry, for Prince Slick was pointing at her and laughing. "She didn't want to hear about physics because she would rather be polishing my shoes," he said, with a cruel tone in his voice. The whole palace began laughing, except Allen. He reached into his pocket and gave Cindy a handkerchief.
"It's okay, Cindy. Let's go get you some ice cream."
Cindy smiled and gazed into Allen's green photon reflecting eyes. She didn't fall in love with Prince Slick, but she had fallen in love with her prince charming.
So, hand in hand, with laughs surrounding them, Cindy and Allen left the castle. They were traveling at 0.8 meters per second and they had to walk 1,000 meters, but within about 21 minutes Cindy and Allen would be sharing a hot fudge sundae.
