Scooby-Doo and the Island of Terror

By Katie Rubin, 8th-grade student

"Like, are we almost there guys? I'm starving," Shaggy said as his stomach rumbled loudly.

"Ruh ro!' Scooby's stomach echoed Shaggy's.

"Just a few more miles guys," Fred replied, "besides, if my uncle actually called us to come and help him, something is seriously wrong"

"Yeah, and when we get there he'll probably have some food already put out," Daphne said.

Just then the Mystery Machine rolled around a bend in the road, and hit a huge rock! Blowing out a tire! As Fred went to inspect the tire, a huge flash of lightening lit up the sky, revealing the extremely spooky silhouette of a mansion a few minutes away. Shaggy and Scooby bolted under the covers.

"Hey! There's Uncle Benny's house," Fred exclaimed excitedly!

"Th-th-that's his house," Shaggy stuttered, "there's no way I'm going in there. You with me on this one Scoob?"

"Ror rure!" Scooby and Shaggy went back under the covers. "Like no wonder this is called Terror Island!" Shaggy squeaked.

"Come on guys, don't be such wimps! Would you go in for a Scooby Snack?" Velma coaxed.

At the mention of food Shaggy and Scooby both perked up.

"Rok," Scooby said, Velma tossed them each a snack and they were on their way.

The gang made their way up the crooked path. An owl hooted and bats flew over head.

"This place sure is creepy," Daphne said as she grabbed for Fred's hand.

"Come on Daphe," Fred said, "there's nothing to worry about. I used to play out here. It's really not scary."

Just then they reached a big, old, spooky door. Fred lifted his hand to knock the doorknocker, which looked like a demon's head, when Maurice, the butler, opened the door.

"We've been expecting you," he said in his deep dragged out voice. The gang shuddered and reluctantly entered.

"Well, aren't y'all just the cutest little thangs!" Sally, Uncle Benny's mistress, said in her strong Texas accent.

"HI Sally!" Fred said warmly. "Sally here practically raised me every summer since I was five."

"And weren't you just the sweetest thing!" Sally kissed Fred on the forehead, leaving bright red lipstick on him.

"Well, where's Uncle Benny?" Fred asked politely.

"Oh, you haven't heard? He was kidnapped yesterday! It's just so dreadful!" Sally said in the verge of tears.

"Do you have any idea who might have done it?" Velma inquired.

"Well now that you mention it, I think I know who did it. It all started a few days ago. We were just sitting in the living room, and then what do ya' know the house starts a shakin'. Benny, oh bless his heart, ran to go see what was happenin' to the house. He came back looking like he'd seen a ghost. He was holdin' a piece of paper," Sally went to go get it, she was once again on the verge of tears. She gave the piece of paper to the gang. It had the words "GET OUT NOW!" written on it in blood! As they were reading it the note faded and the blood disappeared.

"Who do you think wrote it?" Velma asked, she was feeling the paper.

"I know who did it; it was the ghost of Salty Sam, the meanest pirate to ever sail the seven seas. He lived here and supposedly buried his treasure here! But, believe me, the island has been searched many a time, no such treasure ever existed," Sally finished.

"What did Benny do for a living?" Velma asked still feeling the paper.

"Why he was a chemist, but what does that have to do with all this? Sally asked, looking puzzled.

"InterestingŠ" Velma replied. "Would you mind if I looked at this paper a little more closely?"

"No, not at all," Sally said.

It was getting late so after a quick dinner the gang went to bed. As they were sleeping, guys in one room and girls in the other, Scooby woke up with a start. The ghost of Salty Sam was peering at him through the window! He was just hovering outside of the second story window. He was white and was growling at Scoob!

"Arrggg. Ye's best be getting yer selves outta here! This be me's final warnin'! Salty Sam said.

"Raggy! Relp relp!" Scooby shouted. Shaggy woke up and screamed! Fred, awaken by all the commotion, woke up just in time to see Salty Sam disappear in a flash of purple flames!

"Where did he go? Fred asked the very scared Scooby and Shaggy.

"I d-d-don't know," Shaggy stuttered in fear.

"What's all the commotion about?" Daphne and Velma asked. They had awoken when Shaggy and Scooby were screaming.

"We saw the ghost of Salty Sam. So that's one thing Sally's right about." Fred said, as coolly as he could.

"What's this?" Velma asked as she saw some burned powder on the ground.

"That's the carbon left over from Salty Sam's fiery disappearance." Fred answered.

"Really, what color was the flame?" Velma asked looking as if things were starting to make sense.

"Purple, why?" Fred asked, he was totally lost.

"I think this mystery is staring to add up. Lets make a plan." Velma

said as she called the group over to her.

"I'll give you two Scooby Snacks." Velma pleaded with Scooby.

"Ro, rok!" Scooby said gulping down the treats.

"Ok, you all know what to do right?" Velma asked as she finished up painting a "treasure chest".

"Like, we know already!" Shaggy said.

"Ok, well get out there, once Salty Sam comes, just lure him over here to the X. Then Velma, Daphe, and I will drop the net on him," Fred said as he admired his handy work. He'd made the net from scraps.

"Oh! Scooby, come look at what I found!" Shaggy yelled so Salty Sam could hear. "I think I found a treasure chest! And it's full!"

"Rreat rob Raggy!" Scooby yelled. Then, as if it was scripted, Salty Sam appeared.

"Ye better be givin' that to me lattes'," Salty growled.

"No, like finders keepers dude!" Shaggy said as he backed over the X.

"Oh, that be yer first mistake," Salty sneered. Just then he crossed the X and Fred, Daphne and Velma dropped the net. Salty Sam was trapped under the net.

"Who is it y'all?" Sally asked, as she and Maurice came running in.

"Wait, if it's not Sally or Maurice, who could it be?" Daphne asked.

"It's Uncle Benny," Velma said as she wiped off his face. "Just as I thought. He's covered in sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3."

"What?" Everyone asked.

"He's covered in baking soda," Velma explained, "that's what gave him his ghostly appearance.

"How did you know it was me?" Uncle Benny asked.

"Well, when the note you left disappeared, I tested it and found that it was written on goldenrod paper. And that when you had written it all you did was use a strong base, like Windex, on it to make it look like blood. Then, when I tested the chemical residue left from your disappearance I found that it was pure potassium. When I asked Sally what you did for a living it really gave you away. Who other than a chemist could possible have pure potassium? I knew that you had abducted yourself to eliminate yourself from the suspect list. Plus if you scared off Sally and Maurice you could have all the treasure to yourself." Velma finished

"There's only one thing I don't understand," Velma asked, "how did you fly up to a second story window?"

"Well, this was one of my best ideas. I mixed vinegar and baking soda to inflate a bunch of balloons attached to my back and lift me up to the window. It was genius!" Uncle Benny said, then a glare spread over his face. "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids and your dumb dog!"

"Well, like that's one more mystery solved, but Velma how come you knew to look for the science clues?" Shaggy asked as they drank their milkshakes.

"It's elementary, dear Shaggy," Velma said in her best English accent. They all laughed.

"Robby &endash; Robby &endash; Roo!" Scooby howled.

"Wait, like I don't get it?" Shaggy said.
