Caldecott Reading Club
The Caldecott Award is given once a year in January to the most outstanding
illustrated children’s book of the year. To become a member of the
Caldecott Club and earn newsletter recognition and prizes a student must
read (or be read to) either Caldecott award or Caldecott honor books and
turn their list in to the library. Blank Caldecott forms are available
in the library and the kindergarten teachers have forms available for their
students. The list of books read is maintained by the student and
is to be turned in to Mrs. Stepetic when each level is reached. The
list is returned to the student, via their teacher as soon as their information
has been recorded.
The number of Caldecott award or honor books necessary for recognition
varies at each grade level, with kindergarteners earning recognition for
every increment of 10 books read and each grade level requirement increasing
by five. Read 150 books and you will be an official member of the
Double Eagle Library Caldecott Hall of Fame!
This club is primarily geared to the kindergarteners through second
grade but we have had students determined to get their name in the Hall
of Fame and continue to read Caldecotts throughout their time at DE.
This is the only club that does not have a short quiz/test that accompanies
each book read. The exception is when students in grades 3-5 participate
in this club they are quizzed on a variety of the books on their list as
it is turned in.
The Caldecott books are in their own area of the library and are labeled
for all students to find them easily.
Newbery Reading Club
The Newbery Award is also given once a year in January but this award
is to recognize the writing of the most outstanding intermediate aged children
(through young adult) American author. To become a member of
the Newbery Club and earn prizes a student must read Newbery award or honor
books. Newsletter recognition & prizes are given at the completion
of every 5th book the student has successfully tested on. The list
of books read & successfully tested on are maintained in the library.
When a student has read and tested on 50 Newbery books they will be an
official member of the Double Eagle Library Newbery Hall of Fame!
This club is primarily geared to middle 3rd grade through 5th grade.
Many of these books also interest children through middle school and sometimes,
depending upon the book, into high school.
Most of the Newbery books are in the fiction section of the library.
All Newbery books are labeled with a yellow sticker on their spine.
The Junie B. Jones, Franklin, Arthur and Magic Tree House book clubs all are run in a similar fashion in that the list of books read & tested on by a student are maintained in the library. With each club, students receive an award after successfully testing on 5 books. At this time, their names are also listed in the next Double Eagle newsletter, on the Friends of the Library page. For Junie B. Jones, Arthur & Franklin, the maximum number of books to read for awards is 15: for Magic Tree House, the maximum number of books to read for awards is 20. When students successfully read and test on the maximum number of books for the club they are in, their name will also be posted on the Readers Board for that particular reading club. All of the Readers Boards are in the library. When students reach this level they may always continue to read the great books in the series but will no longer be allowed to test on them. This has helped to broaden the student’s interest in other books and authors.
Mystery Club – This book club has the same
5 book recognition as the other clubs but the books read has a different
format. There are specific books that are to be read – 5 from each
set. Because the mystery genre is so wide ranging we have limited
the choices to Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Nate the Great, National Parks Mysteries
& ghost mystery books by Betty Ren Wright. It is my hope that
we will be able to expand the student choices in the future. All
of the books for this club are located on the book tower on the east side
of the library and are labeled with a ? on the spine. The final level
of recognition for the Mystery Reader Board is 25.
