How to Determine Distance on a Map

The map on this page shows the route of the Oregon Trail.  The map scale can help you determine distance on the trail.  Notice that the map scale shows distance in both miles and kilometers.

One way to measure a curving route is to use a string.  Take a piece of string and hold the string on the map.  Make a mark with a pencil or pen on the string at the starting place.  Then use the string to follow the route.  Make another mark on the string at the ending place.  Place the string against the map scale.  You can measure off the distance by making a mark every 200 miles.
