Classroom Overview

Welcome to 2nd grade!  My name is Tanya Mauldin and I am delighted to be working with your child.  I want your child  to have the best possible year and look forward to working with all of you.  Here is some information you will find useful for the upcoming year.

Communication:  The first day of each week your child should bring home a note on colored paper, the “Monday” note.  This will include a list of the spelling words, homework assignments, notify you of special events, etc.  Every Friday, a white Double Eagle folder will come home with important newsletters, etc. from the whole school.  The folder should return on Mondays.  If you have any questions or concerns, please send a note, email (tmaul3@aol.com) or call me at 857-0187 and leave a message on voice mail.  DO NOT leave urgent messages on voice mail.  I only check it once a day, usually in the morning.  I am generally at school by 8:00 a.m.

Homework:  Following the 2nd grade homework policy that was sent home, we will have homework Monday through Thursday.  A part of that will be parent assisted reading for 15 minutes each day.  The other part includes spelling, math, reading, etc.  and will always be listed on the “Monday” note.  Purple homework folders should come home Monday and return to school with the homework inside on Friday.

Daily Work Folders:  Your child will bring home a dark green folder every other Thursday.  Inside the folder you will find your student’s work from the past week or so.  This assures that you are seeing the student’s work and progress.  Please look over the papers, keep them and sign the sheet in the front of the folder.  Your comments are optional but appreciated.  The folder should return to school on Friday.  My initials will signify that your comment was read.

“Money”:  Play “Mauldin Money” is earned for good classroom behavior, following directions quickly, being on task, etc.  The students write their name on the “Mauldin Money” and deposit it in our bank.  At the end of each trimester, students count their “Mauldin Money” and use it to purchase prizes at a special classroom store.

Marble Jar:  Marbles are earned for whole class good behavior.  When the marble jar is full, the class votes on a special reward such as extra recess, popcorn and video, ice cream party, etc.

No Homework Coupons:  These are extremely tough to earn!  They are awarded for consistent excellent behavior, always returning homework, etc.  The student may turn this in for one homework assignment by stapling it to that assignment.

Reading Calendars:  At the beginning of each month, the students make a calendar that lists special events such as birthdays, field trips, vacation days, etc.  Please have your child record the number of minutes he/she reads each day.  The calendar needs to be signed by the parents and returned at the end of the month.  We keep track of how many minutes each child reads.

Makeup Work:  Students who go on vacation during the school year are asked to keep a journal of their vacation.  Please ask for the journal before you leave.  Any other work that was completed while you are gone can be made up when you return.

Curriculum:  Rather than isolating subjects I strive to integrate all the areas into our unit of study.  You may follow the link to a detailed overview. Please note that a copy of the complete APS Curriculum Guide is available for checkout from the office if you would like detailed information.
