At Dolores Gonzales Elementary School we know that nothing is more important to students’ success than parents and adults actively engaged in their lives and schooling. We plan and assess our parent engagement according to the six keys of the Joyce Epstein Model of parent involvement, a well-researched and popular model. Below is an outline of its six keys and the standards we strive for (which were written by the National PTA).

Joyce Epstein’s Keys National PTA Standards
Key One: Improve Communication Std. One: Communication between home and school is regular, two way, and meaningful
Key Two: Promote Positive Parenting Std. Two: Parenting skills are promoted and supported.
Key Three: Enhance student learning Std. Three: Parents play an integral role in assisting student learning.
Key Four: Increase Volunteerism Std. Four: Parents are welcome in the school, and their support and assistance are sought.
Key Five: Support decision making and advocacy Std. Five: Parents are full partners in the decisions that affect children and families.
Key Six: Collaborate with the community Std. Six Community Resources are used to strengthen schools, families, and student learning.
