FROM YOUR PRINCIPAL: Here it is October already and things are really going well and students are working very hard to meet grade level standards and expectations. We are also preparing for parent/teacher conferences which are scheduled for 23 and 24 November. During conferences students will go over their data folders and share their personal goals and where they are in moving towards their goals. We want all parents to know and understand student’s academic, behavioral and social goals and we want students to share this information with their parents. Please mark your calendars to attend these conferences so all students will be able to share the work they are so proud of. We would like to have 100% participation in conferences for ALL classrooms, so please make arrangements to attend and share the successes of your children.

FROM OUR NURSE: As you know, the flu has hit New Mexico pretty hard and we are all trying to keep our students and ourselves healthy. Just a reminder to please keep children at home if they have a fever greater than 100°, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue or muscle aches. These are all signs of the flu and children should rest at home, drink plenty of liquids and take fever reducers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Children can return to school when they no longer have a fever without having to take fever reducing medication. If we all follow these basic rules, we will be healthy and keep the flu from spreading school wide. Thank you for your help in keeping all our students healthy and in school.

FROM KIDS COOK: We are proud to announce that Ms. Mary Turpin, one of our parents, is our new Kids Cook Teacher this year! She has already started her classes and she, students and teachers are enjoying the program as always. Parents are a vital part of this program and we want to encourage you or a family member to come and help with your child’s class for the cooking projects. Teachers sign up for a cooking time and your students will invite you to come and help. The meal preparation takes a lot of work so help is always welcome and appreciated. Ms. Turpin engages students in multicultural cooking events, looking at the geographic regions where the recipes originate and students even exercise as part of good physical fitness and nutrition.

FOR YOUR CALENDAR: 30 October, Embracing Fatherhood, an event for students and their father, uncle, brother or other significant males in their lives. 10 November artes los martes, 12 November Flu Clinic, 13 November end of the first trimester, Book Fair Week, 16-20 November, 19 November Thanksgiving Lunch in the cafeteria, 23 and 24 November Parent/Teacher conferences, 25 – 27 November Thanksgiving break. More information on these events will be coming as the time gets closer; we just want you to put these on your calendar so you can make arrangements to attend.

PARENT SURVEY: Just need to let you know that we did not make AYP this year on the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment and therefore our school has been designated as School Improvement (SI-1). This means that we have much work to do with our students, staff and parents in order to comply with requirements from Public Education Department. Please rest assured that we will continue to work diligently with our staff and students to provide the best instruction possible as always and help our students to make progress. During Parent/Teacher Conferences, we will ask parents to complete a survey giving us feedback on our school and instructional programs to collect data from parents, teachers and students. The survey will be done on the computer and we will set up the computer lab and the parent room to assist you in completing this survey. The survey will be available in both Spanish and English so everyone will have access. Please plan to come to the lab or parent room before or after your child’s conference and there will be someone there to help you. If you have a computer at home, you can complete the survey at home at any time during the 20 day window. We will let you know when the survey will be available and how to access it. We really need parent feedback and look forward to working with you here at school or having you send in the survey yourself from your own home computer.

We have recently completed our Dolores Gonzales Web Page, thanks to Mr. Chris Sanchez, and we want to see how many parents have a computer at home or have access to a computer in order to use the web site. This will also help us prepare for the parent survey during conferences. Please fill out the form, cut the bottom portion and return to your child’s teacher. DE SU DIRECTORA: es octubre y todo está marchando muy bien y los estudiantes están trabajando mucho para alcanzar las metas de los estándares de su grado y las expectativas que tenemos para ellos. También estamos preparando las conferencias de padres y maestros que serán el 23 y 24 de noviembre. Durante estas conferencias los estudiantes presentarán sus carpetas con sus datos y trabajo para poder compartir con sus padres sus metas y cómo están trabajando para alcanzarlas. Deseamos que todos los padres sepan y comprendan las metas académicas, sociales y de comportamiento y queremos que los estudiantes compartan esta información con sus padres. Por favor marquen estas fechas en su calendario para que asistan a sus conferencias y puedan compartir con sus hijos el trabajo del que están muy orgullosos.

DE SU ENFEREMRA: Como ya saben, la influenza ha pegado muy duro en Nuevo Mexico y estamos tratando de mantener a nuestros estudiantes y personal sanos. Solamente les recordamos que no traigan a sus hijos a la escuela si tienen fiebre de 100º, tos, dolor de garganta, dolores musculares o fatiga. Éstos son síntomas de que los niños deben guardar descanso en sus hogares, tomar muchos líquidos y tomar medicina para reducir la fiebre. Los niños pueden regresar a clases solamente cuando ya no tengan fiebre sin haber tomado medicina para reducirla. Si todos seguimos estas reglas básicas, estaremos sanos y evitaremos contagiar la influenza a todos los demás en la escuela. Gracias por su ayuda al ayudarnos a que todos nuestros estudiantes estén sanos en la escuela.

DE LAS CLASES DE “KIDS COOK” (LOS NIÑOS COCINAN): Tenemos el orgullo de anunciar que la señora Turpin, una de nuestras mamás, ¡es la nueva maestra del programa de Kids Cook este año! Ya ha empezado sus clases y ella, los estudiantes, maestros están contentos de tener estas clases. Los padres son parte muy importante de este programa y les motivamos, a ustedes o alguien de la familia, que vengan a ayudar en los proyectos de cocina. Los maestros escogen el día y hora para tener esta clase e invitan a los padres para que vengan a participar. La preparación de los platillo toma tiempo y esfuerzo, así que su ayuda es muy apreciada. La señora Turpin les enseña a los niños los aspectos culturales de los platillos que van a preparar, las regiones de países de donde provienen y hasta hacen ejercicios físicos como parte del programa de nutrición y condición física.

PARA SU CALENDARIO: el viernes 30 de octubre tendremos “Valorando la Paternidad”, un evento para que los niños traigan a sus padres, tíos, hermanos mayores, abuelitos, u otros varones importantes en su vida. El 10 de noviembre tendremos “Artes los martes”. El 12 de noviembre Clínica de Vacunación. El 13 de noviembre es final del primer trimestre de clases. Feria del Libro del 16 al 20 de noviembre, 19 de noviembre almuerzo de Día de Gracias en la cafetería de la escuela.. Conferencias de Padres y Maestros, 23 y 24 de noviembre. Del 25 al 27 de noviembre Receso de Día de Gracias. Les daremos más información en cuanto cada evento se aproxime, solamente deseamos que apunten estas fechas en su calendario para que hagan planes para asistir.

ENCUESTA PARA LOS PADRES: Solamente deseo informarles que este año no obtuvimos el “AYP” (Progreso Anual), parte del Asesoramiento Basado en Estándares del Estado de Nuevo Mexico. Nuestra escuela ha sido asignada como una escuela que necesita mejorar (SI-1). Esto quiere decir que tenemos que trabajar mucho con nuestros estudiantes, maestros y padres para llenar los requisitos del Departamento de Educación Pública. Por favor estén seguros de que seguiremos trabajando con nuestros estudiantes y maestros diligentemente, como siempre, para proveerles de la mejor instrucción posible y lograr el progreso requerido. Durante las conferencias de padres y maestros les pediremos a todos los padres que llenen una encuesta para que nos den su opinión en cuanto a los programas de instrucción para recaudar información de parte de maestros, padres y estudiantes. Esta encuesta ser á en computadora, así que tendremos las computadoras de nuestro laboratorio para que llenen su encuesta y tendremos personal que los pueda asistir en lo que necesiten. Esta encuesta es en inglés y en español para que todos puedan llenar su encuesta. Por favor planeen venir antes o después de su conferencia para que puedan ir al laboratorio de computadores para llenar su encuesta, allí habrá alguien quien los asista. Si ustedes tienen computadora en casa ustedes pueden llenarla cuando puedan mientras sea dentro de los 20 días de la fecha en que está disponible en la red electrónica (Web). Les informaremos cuando esté la encuesta disponible en la red y les diremos como abrirla para que la contesten. Necesitamos mucho la opinión de los padres y deseamos que todos llene la encuesta. Estaremos listos para asistirlos aquí en la escuela o cómo llenarla y mandarla directamente desde su casa.

Recientemente hemos completado una encuesta para los padres en nuestro sitio en la red electrónica gracias al maestro Chris Sánchez. Deseamos saber cuántos padres tienen computadoras o tienen acceso a una para poder ver nuestra página en la “web”. Por favor llenen la forma de abajo y regrésenla a los maestros de sus hijos.
