Comanche serves approximately 450 of the greatest kids in Albuquerque! This is clearly evident as you learn that 117 (yes, 117) of our 4th and 5th grade students volunteer their recesses to serve as PEER MEDIATORS, ready to assist other students resolve playground disputes. Twenty-five students volunteer before or after school as members of our SAFETY PATROL to assure that fellow students are safely dropped off and picked up at the popular vehicle drive-thru. You’ll be inspired by the fifth grade students in CUB KIDS CARE who volunteer after school several times every month to visit numerous sites around our city where they actively learn about the value of volunteerism. And, you will be struck by the overwhelming sense that CHARACTER COUNTS! among these polite and well behaved youngsters. Our richly diverse student population boasts bilingual speakers of some 10 different languages including Greek, Spanish, Vietnamese and Urdu. Through our Alternative Language Services (ALS) plan, our English language learners receive sheltered content instruction within their classrooms.
Comanche is a place that is Proud of our 1992 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of the ODYSSEY OF THE MIND, Comanche’s dedicated staff continue to strive for world class excellence. The teachers at Comanche have developed a unique TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM for our students which is supported through our state-of-the-art fully networked computer lab and classrooms. Our SPECIAL EDUCATION team has devoted years to working with general education teachers to develop a model inclusionary program. Kindergartners and 1st graders delight in showing you the songs, gestures and drawings from their ANIMATED LITERACY curriculum which firmly establishes the phonemic foundation needed for all of the reading and writing they will be doing through our BALANCED LITERACY and 6+1 TRAIT WRITING instruction. The excited raucous noise you’ll hear is probably students in WELLNESS class, our highly successful alternative to PE. The ARTS are alive and well at Comanche through the incredible APS Fine Arts itinerant art and music teachers who visit our school every other year, but also thanks to the ART IN THE SCHOOL parent volunteers who receive training so they can present art lessons in our classrooms throughout the year and sustain our 5th GRADE LEGACY PROJECT. This, and so much more, occurs daily at Comanche, and, thanks to our exceptional SAFE SCHOOL PLAN, it all occurs in an environment in which students feel safe - emotionally and physically.
