About Our School

Chelwood Elementary first opened its doors in January of 1968. It was one of the first buildings in this part of town and at one point had up to 1200 students. Currently we have 510 children in grades K-5. Our school consists of approximately 30 classrooms, most of them being metal buildings. Our playground has undergone a major renovation last year and it was opened to the children on February 1, 2001. (The picture below is opening day.) This year, we are very fortunate to have the first phase of our new school under construction. Presently, we are building a new cafeteria/auditorium and 8 classrooms to house our 4th and 5th grades. In the second phase, we are scheduled to have 15 additional classrooms and 3 additional kindergarten classrooms built. This will not happen if this February 4th election and future elections do not pass. We need each and every parent's support!

To contact our principal, Dr. Allan Holmquist, you can e-mail him at holmquist@aps.edu

Our school is proud of the education we provide to our students. Our school utilizes the 4 Block Literacy Program. This program stresses the 4 major blocks: guided reading, writing, independent reading, and working with words. We have also added a strong phonics emphasis throughout the school. We are very encouraged by how well the students at Chelwood are doing and are proud to say that our standardized test scores are rising each year. We have a great staff who really care about the children who attend our school.

As our school motto states, we are working to be "Where The Future Begins". At Chelwood, we are proud of our computer lab with 25 Mac computers. We have at least two Mac computers in every classroom and Chelwood is connected to the Internet in the lab and in every classroom so our students are able to do research on the Web. We want to provide the latest tools so that our students can be a part of the ever expanding world of technology.

The Character Counts! Program is a strong part of the educational process at Chelwood. We have monthly assemblies which honor students for demonstrating the Character Counts! traits. We bring in various members of the community to talk about how character is important in their profession and lives. Speakers have included University of New Mexico athletes, city police officers, business professionals, and other community leaders. We have been a leader in the Character Counts! Program and have been highlighted on the NBC Nightly News. We are happy to see the impact this program has on the students at Chelwood and feel this will be an important step to becoming a productive adult. For more information about the Character Counts! Program, go to http://www.charactercounts.org

Chelwood continues to be a school that cares about our students and will look for new ways in the future to enhance the education of the children. We have an extremely competent staff and are proud of the students and the success they have as they move on with their future education.
