2006 – 2007 School Year
Volume 7
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Parents;
1). We have a new district wide attendance program
called School Max.
In this program, teachers will take attendance by
8:35AM each day. All students who arrive after 8:30AM will be
considered tardy and so entered.
It is critical that your children are in class and
seated by 8:30AM.
If your child is sick and will be absent that day,
please call 296-5655 and press 2. Leave a message stating your
child’s first and last name, name of your child’s teacher and the
reason your child is absent.
2). On December 5, 2006, the School Board approved
4.7 Million for our construction project. In this project we will get a
new 16 class room wing plus a new front to the building. Check
out the pictures in the main hallway showing what our new school will
look like. Construction is scheduled to start in April of 2007.
Sincerely,
Allan Holmquist
Principal

Musical Notes
Lisa O’Riley
Itinerant Music Specialist
Dear Parents and Guardians,
My name is Lisa O’Riley. I am pleased to be
teaching music to your children this year at Chelwood Elementary.
Classes began Thursday, August 10th and will continue through the end
of the year for all grade levels. Chelwood is able to have me all
year because our state legislature passed the Fine Arts Education Act a
few years ago.
We are covering the basic elements of music
including tempo, dynamics, form and pitch through activities, which
include listening, movement, singing, games and playing
instruments. These activities support academic growth as they
provide further practice in language development, vocabulary,
symbol/sound relationships, mathematical concepts, multicultural
experiences and more. The program helps the children develop
socially while we work as a team to produce interesting pleasing
music. Children will develop individually as they have a chance
to experiment with different instruments and sounds. Positive
self-concept comes as they mater movements with their bodies and begin
to decode the mysteries of music.
If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on may
voicemail at 83131, and I will return your call as I am able. I
hope your children will grow in their appreciation of music.

PE
Gymnastics unit started last week, which is no surprise to some parents
whose children are practicing shoulder stands, frog stands, head
stands, and hand stands at home. In addition to those “balance”
tricks we have various stretching activities prior to any activity so
everyone is warmed up properly.
Some other full body movements that we are working hard to master
include both big and little cartwheels, forward rolls kick ups and
round offs. Also, we are building six person pyramids,
which involves small group cooperation.
Safety is stressed as it is during all P.E. and Intramural activities,
I am spotting each child during their first tries at learning a “new”
move.
