The purpose of the Adobe Acres Before and After School Tutoring Program is to ensure children's progress in Literacy and Math, as well as all other academic areas. We have identified 'children at risk' through several assessments, i.e. students who are listed in the A.P.S. Alert List; students who are one or two years below grade level in Reading/Math; and students who are on an A.P.S. Academic Improvement Plan. The instructional programs provided to students through the tutoring program are Four Blocks Literacy and Everyday Math.
The program consists of certified teachers, as well as classified instructional assistants who support these teachers and the learning of students. For the school year 2003/2004 seventy-seven students were enrolled in the morning and afternoon programs. Support is provided from first through fifth grades. The students are recommended for the program by their classroom teacher. Parents must then fill out a permission slip before a student can attend the program.
Mrs. Anna M. Garcia is a Title 1/ESL Resource teacher at Adobe Acres Elementary and has coordinated the Tutoring Program for the last two years. She has had many years of tutoring experiences as an instructional assistant and as a teacher. "I feel that a small group instruction program like this can provide additional learning opportunities; increase self-esteem and self-confidence; and enhance students' reading and math scores."
In reality, this program has been a success because of the vision, support, and encouragement of our principal Mr. David Rogers. And of course, it is truly rewarding to work in a school with so many dedicated, interested, and involved teachers and instructional assistants who work so hard and who graciously give so much of their time and energy to this program and the students of Adobe Acres Elementary.
The goal for
Adobe Acres Before and After School Tutoring Program is to provide alternative
and effective learning instruction for 'children at risk' in the areas of
reading and math performance. As a united community, we are working
hard to accomplish this.
