District Demographics

Albuquerque Public Schools is the largest school district in the state of New Mexico, and has almost 90,000 students in over 1,230 square miles.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Winston Brooks, APS partners with families and communities to support our schools and employees, so all students can learn.

The district is committed to increasing student achievement through a standards-based learning environment supported by a system of continuous improvement.

A seven-member community-elected Board of Education jointly leads the District.

As part of this plan, the APS Academic Office strives to develop various relationships with like suited organizations, harvest best practices and seek support for all of our students. Below is a brief listing of some of these relationships the district has developed.

The following are grants awarded to APS and administered by APS Instruction and Accountability:

  • School Improvement Grant (SIG), Ernie Pyle Middle School - Public Education Department ($2 Million)
  • Common Core Standards, Six District Pilot Program (Six Large Districts selected by Council of Great City Schools) – Gates Foundation ($500,000)
  • Harvard Strategic Data Project, Research Driven Grant to Increase Student Achievement and Close the Achievement Gap for Hispanic Students Gates Foundation ($2 Million)
  • Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program (ESSCP) Grant – US Department of Education ($1.2 Million)
  • Urban School Counseling Initiative Grant - National Organization for School Counselor Advocacy (NOSCA) College Board
  • Smaller Learning Communities Program (SLCP) Grant - US Department of Education ($5 Million)
  • Safe Schools and Healthy Students Grant - US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Juvenile Justice ($9 Million)
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Agency (SAMHSA) Linking Adolescents to Mental Health Service Grant – US Department of Education Program Director (2006 - 2009)
