Executive Summary
This Academic Plan was created on behalf of students and was designed for the adults who will assume the responsibility for guiding those students through our schools.
Many individuals have contributed to the conversation on what we must do to make this happen: principals, teachers and support staff in our schools; members of the New Mexico State Education Department; elected officials and community leaders; parents and community members in our neighborhoods. The recommendations from these groups, along with primary research and district data provided the foundation of our work.
This plan provides specific directions on how to get students where they need to be. When we achieve the goals we’ve set, it will be clear to all, what students must know and do in order to earn their diplomas, preparing them for college readiness, and/or a career path of their choice, with no need for remedial courses. The ultimate goal is to provide the tools needed to be productive citizens.
In concert with the District’s Strategic Plan, the APS Academic Plan is premised on delivering learning systems that are research-based, providing a solid foundation of knowledge and skills for every student, including English language learners, and students with special needs. We have rigorous goals which focus on creating centers of excellence. As a related objective, the Academic Plan is also aimed at advancing performance for all teachers and administrators.
We have divided the Academic Plan into four areas of focus:
- Teaching and Learning
- A Marketplace of Choices and Opportunities
- Family and Community Involvement
- Accountability for Student Achievement (Academic Excellence)
Within each of these areas, we developed top line goals and objectives that are supported by strategies and tactics.
Measurements of the plan’s success are clearly defined and are purposely divided into several areas, allowing for a check and balance system.
The measurements include:
- SBA testing results
- ACT score performance trends
- NM math and reading performance trends
- Trends of students in special education programs
- Graduation rate targets, both 4- and 5-year
- Performance against National Assessment of Educational Programs (NAEP) standards
- Advanced Placement enrollment numbers and test results
- Achievement gaps
- Truancy
