APS Vision

The Academic Vision of Albuquerque Public Schools is to serve our community by educating and promoting our students using the fundamental principles of equity and equality.

The mainline goal of APS’ Academic Office is to drive the achievement of academic excellence throughout the whole district. This goal is supported by multiple initiatives, and forms the foundation for the departments' strategic plans. Many of the everyday efforts and resources are focused on propelling this goal forward.

Within the past several years, the district has collected research data from multiple sources including federal and state data banks, local organizations and through commissioned local market research. We have analyzed much data and have identified several opportunities within the district, which will better allow for 21st Century learning. The Academic Office is charged with supporting teaching methodologies and principles that focus on, and more importantly, drive rigorous learning.

As a direct result of these strategies and tactics, overall positive outcomes will include:

  • Direct increase in academic excellence
  • Closing of the achievement gap
  • Rise in the graduation rate

The APS Academic Plan provides a framework for a district direction, setting priorities, re-allocating resources, creating new schools and management systems, and building the capacity of our staff.

As part of the Albuquerque community, APS enjoys strong relationships with many important groups including business leaders, politicians, community activists and our parents. Each of these groups hold common beliefs in their expectations of our schools and the education delivered to our young people. As part of our curricular plan, we have conducted formal and informal research within our business and workforce communities. Results of this research point out that our business community is united around the idea that students need certain skills to be successful and compete in today’s global workforce. At the core of these skills are critical thinking and problem solving. At APS we call these the “21st Century Skills.”

These skills include:

On an Academic Level, every child in our district will:

  • Read by the third grade
  • Complete the 8th grade with essential reading, writing and math skills
  • Have Algebra 1 success at 9th grade

Upon Graduation every child in our district will be college and/or career ready, with these skills:

  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Adaptability
  • Initiative
  • Effective oral and writing abilities
  • The ability to access and analyze information
  • The ability to create and imagine

Using this list as a benchmark for critical thinking and problem solving, we have intertwined a mixture of skill and knowledge practices for our students. The challenge is delivering content and skills in a rich way that genuinely improves outcomes for all of our students.
