Winston Brooks and Three Other Urban School District Superintendents Discuss the Economy’s Impact on Schools

— filed under:

November 28, 2011

Superintendent Winston Brooks was among four urban school district leaders interviewed last month on the devastating effect the struggling U.S. economy has had on school budgets. Brooks and Mary Ellen Elia of Tampa, Fla., Gene T. Harris of Columbus, Ohio, and Carol Johnson of Boston were interviewed during the Council of the Great City Schools’ fall meeting in Boston on difficult decisions they have had to make, and about the budget cuts that threatened teacher jobs, halted badly needed renovation projects, and curtailed services and instruction for students.

The four superintendents also talked about the American Jobs Act’s proposed funding for teachers and modernizing urban schools. In September, President Obama called on Congress to invest $60 billion in education through the Jobs Act. America’s educators are still waiting.
