Welcome back teachers and school staff!

Read Superintendent Reedy's back-to-school message to employees.

I start each school year with a mix of emotions. The first day back for teachers and school staff marks the end of summer, which can be bittersweet, especially if you – like me – had the chance to spend time with family, travel, tackle a project or two, catch your breath.

On the other hand, there’s nothing more exhilarating than the promise of a new school year. So many possibilities and great ideas to share. So much important work to do!

Still, I always felt a little anxious as a teacher and administrator as I walked into school on that first day – all those new faces, procedures, materials, rules, expectations.

Then again, what’s better than reuniting with old friends and colleagues, meeting enthusiastic new staff members, sharing hopes and plans, getting another opportunity – or maybe, if you’re new to education, getting your first chance – to really make a difference in the lives of the students we serve.

This school year, like every school year, has the potential to be great or disappointing; productive or mundane; successful or failing.

Much of its fate, my friend, depends on you.

I hope you commit to making this the best year yet for the students in Albuquerque Public Schools, and for yourself. I know that’s easy to say on the first day of school. I also know how difficult it becomes as we deal with the many challenges our students and families face on a daily basis.

Nonetheless, my promise is to work alongside you through good times and bad this school year to get more of our students learning, succeeding, graduating.

We are a team. We’re in this together. The prize is well worth the struggle.

In the spirit of this teamwork, I would like to invite you to a welcome back picnic from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Montgomery Park. Check out the invitation below for more information.

Save the date and let’s start this school year as a team. Like I said, we’re all in this together.
