News from the Superintendent

Thank You, Veterans!

In her weekly message to employees, Supt. Reedy expresses gratitude for those who serve and those who have served.

I am a history buff, and one of the eras I am most fascinated with is World War II. When I read a book or see a movie about the men and women in uniform who sacrificed so much to help others, I get chills. We owe them a debt of gratitude, from the soldiers who stormed the beaches at Normandy to the heroic Navajo Code Talkers to the women who worked as nurses, drove trucks, repaired airplanes and so much more.

That gratitude is extended to all the men and women who serve on our behalf, in wartime and peace, at home and abroad, in active military and the reserves. On this Veterans Day weekend, let’s make sure we take a moment to say thank you.

And that includes to many of you. We have so many teachers, administrators, custodians, police officers, coaches and, of course, JROTC instructors who have served our country. I want you to know how much I appreciate you, not just for your military service, but also because when you hung up your uniform, you chose to keep serving your community. You continue to make daily sacrifices and contributions on behalf of our students.

Many of those students will go on to join the military as well, just as countless APS graduates have before them. I am so proud of our former students who donned uniforms on behalf of this nation, and I am impressed by those who will follow in their footsteps.

I also want to acknowledge all of our family members and neighbors who are veterans as well as active duty service members including those stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base. I recently met with Col. Juan Alvarez, the 377th Air Base Wing Mission Support Group commander. He and members of his team got together with me and members of mine to talk about ways we can support each other from improved communications to our roles in emergencies to supporting our military students and families. I am grateful to have such a strong working relationship with KAFB. They are an invaluable part of our community and I appreciate all they do.

I hope you, like me, will take some time this Veterans Day weekend to thank those who serve and those who have served. Because of them – because of many of you – we live in peace, we live free.
