Spread the Word: School Choice Fair is Thursday!

Superintendent Reedy encourages students, families and employees to attend the annual event from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

APS is an urban-suburban-rural public school district. Our diverse population runs the gamut, from families who live in apartments amid the hustle and bustle of business to single-family homes in quiet neighborhoods to small or sprawling farms along river-fed acequias.

Our schools are reflections of the neighborhoods they serve, and for most of our students, that works out just fine. But when the school down the block isn’t a good fit for a child or his family, we need to offer alternatives.

That’s why I’m excited to once again attend the annual APS School Choice Fair next Thursday, Oct. 26, from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The School Choice Fair is one of the best ways to show all we have to offer to students and families. It isn’t just about magnet schools or charters. It isn’t even about transfers. It’s about celebrating the wonderfulness that is Albuquerque Public Schools.

As you know, we’ve been working hard over the past few years to make education more personal, more responsive. That’s what the Learning Zones are all about – meeting the unique needs of our students, schools and neighborhoods.

The School Choice Fair aligns perfectly with this mission. It allows students and families to search for the learning environment that works best for them. Surely, we have a school that provides the right fit. Maybe it’s a smaller, more intimate setting; a school closer to work or caregivers; a community rich in tradition; a specific academic focus such as dual language, STEM, fine arts or dual credit.

Maybe it’s your school.

I encourage you to extend an invitation to anyone with a school-age child, or just an interest in public education. We’ve been working hard to get the word out – maybe you’ve heard the radio ads, seen the billboards, read the social media posts. But nothing is more effective than word of mouth.

I’d love to see you there, too. All employees play a role in creating comfortable learning environments for our students to learn, thrive, excel.

Thanks once again to the city of Albuquerque, we’ll have lots of space at the Convention Center for the fair, where folks can walk around, talk to principals, teachers and students and gather information about our schools and programs.

Limited parking in the Convention Center parking lot is free for our guests and concessions will be on sale. Some of our students will be providing entertainment, too.

Spread the word. The Choice Fair is a great opportunity to show the community some of the good things that are happening in Albuquerque Public Schools.
