News from the Superintendent: November 10, 2009
November 9, 2009
Good afternoon.
Let's start today with some good news about generous APS employees. Even with a few schools yet to be added in, this year's United Way campaign
total stands at $221,100. Everyone knows what a tough economic year
it's been, but you stepped up when United Way and our community really
need it. Thank you so much for your support. For those of you who
haven't filled out a pledge form or know your school hasn't turned in
its pledges, please get them to the APS Education Foundation by Friday,
and then a final total can be announced soon.
By the end of last week, everyone who is participating in self-directed professional development
should have signed their department's employee roster and listed their
development activity. The stipend of 1 percent of your current salary
for completing that activity will show up in your paycheck two weeks
from now.
Fall sports are wrapping up, and I wanted to
take a moment to congratulate the La Cueva boys and Eldorado girls on
winning state soccer championships. Also, congratulations to the Cibola
boys and Eldorado girls teams that won state titles in cross country.
Vincent Montoya of Cibola and Kristy Hannah of Eldorado were top
runners for their teams. These are terrific accomplishments by teams
and individuals.
As football playoffs get started and winter
sports start gearing up, I just want to remind everyone of the spirit
of sportsmanship. My point is that every action reflects on a player
and his or her team. Have fun and keep making your school, fellow
teammates and the community proud.
Finally, Wednesday is Veterans' Day
and students and school staff have the day off. I know many teachers
make this more than just a day off by bringing in veterans to speak or
through classroom projects. Our service people have made substantial
sacrifices for our country and it's important that we share that with
today's students. There are veterans working for APS at school and
non-school sites and I encourage you to join me in thanking them for
their service.
Have a great week.
