Good afternoon.
Back in my high school days, I spent a lot of time on the basketball court. You’ve probably heard me say before that playing a sport inspired me to go to school every day more than algebra did. But, more than motivation, basketball was my outlet for keeping physically fit.
If you’re looking for a way to get fit, stay fit or keep a New Year’s resolution, I encourage you to check out the annual APS Employee Fitness Challenge. This year’s challenge begins with a kick-off event today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Montezuma Elementary gym. You can get a free fitness assessment and talk with fitness experts. You can also register for the challenge and for free fitness classes.
The challenge is an eight-week program offering a little friendly competition to see who can take the most steps. Record the number of steps or the amount of time you spending moving each day at the challenge’s website (www.startwalkingnow.org), and by March 23, you may qualify for prizes. Sign up as an individual or form a team with co-workers.
All the information on the challenge and this afternoon’s event is available on a new page at the APS website.
The biggest benefit for anyone taking part in a little exercise right now is stress release. It’s obvious that we’re all under stress right now with impending budget cuts and the uncertainty of newly elected officials taking charge. Nothing is better for us than physical activity.
There may be a little less “jump” in my shot these days, but I still recognize the value of exercise. It just makes you feel better. Whether you like team sports or taking a walk, it’s important to take care of yourself. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you get out and move.
Have a great week.
Winston Brooks
Superintendent
