Many Great Things Happening in Our Schools

Supt. Reedy spotlights a couple of bilingual students who exemplify effective school programs.

During last week's School Choice Fair, I had a delightful conversation with Chloe and Antonio, two bilingual sixth graders from Truman Middle School. English is Chloe's first language; Antonio is a native Spanish speaker. Now they converse beautifully in both languages. This is all thanks to the dual language programs at their elementary and middle schools.

What a joy it was to chat with these two smart, articulate young people. They spoke confidently without an accent in either English or Spanish, and they told me they can read and write in both languages as well.

Our schools, our teachers, provide so many opportunities for students like Chloe and Antonio. That was apparent at the second annual APS School Choice Fair that featured more than 100 of our elementary, middle, high and charter schools. Many of our traditional schools were represented. Families also were able to familiarize themselves with our schools of choice with focused areas of study like dual language at Truman, technology at Zuni, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) at Hayes and Garfield, and project-based learning at nex+Gen. Students like Antonio and Chloe exemplify how effective these programs are, and brought home the professionalism and dedication of the APS staff that teaches and supports students at our schools.

The lives of these two students, and so many like them, are changed in ways we can only imagine because of the talented teachers, devoted administrators, loyal support staff and so many others dedicated to educating children. The transfer window opens in January for families wanting their child to attend a school outside their neighborhood. Those interested in a transfer may call 855-9040 for more information.

The Choice Fair was a great display of the many great things that are happening in our schools. If you didn't get a chance to visit, take it from me - there is a lot of good happening inside the walls of Albuquerque Public Schools. And to all of those who are making it happen, I tip my hat and once again say thanks. Keep up the good work!

Kind regards,

Raquel  Reedy
APS Superintendent
