Happy Summer!

Looks like we made it, my friend, to the end of another school year. Whew! What a journey it’s been. If you’re like me, you’re pretty exhausted. But it’s a good fatigue, the kind you feel when you’ve successfully reached the finish line, knowing you gave it your all.

Our reserves may be depleted, but our spirits are high as we look back on the important work we did this year. Confirmation comes as we watch our students cross the hall to the next grade, the neighborhood to the next school, and eventually the stage to pick up diplomas, just as the Class of 2016 did last week.

You might be a little sad, too, or frustrated about what we weren’t able to accomplish – when you think about the student who dropped out, the one who never quite mastered multiplication or algebra, the one who still struggles to read.

And, you might be worried about those students who look to us not only for an education but for sanctuary, comfort, support, safety. Please let them be OK this summer.

So it is with mixed emotions that we pack up our rooms and bid students a good summer break. If you’re like me, you’ll be using this time to come up with ways to do things better next year. You might meet with colleagues, take a class or take on a project, read the latest literature or research, attend a workshop.

I hope you also find time to take care of yourself and your family. Enjoy your warm summer days and cool evenings and above all have fun!  Go somewhere exciting and exotic, or comfortable and cozy. Bask in the laughter and smiles of loved ones, in the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done a good job because you have.

I’ll do the same, and then let’s regroup with the commitment to making the 2016-17 school year the best one yet for our students, ourselves, and Albuquerque Public Schools. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and we need you at your best.

Happy Summer!
