Good Happenings!

In her weekly message to employees, Supt. Reedy points out some of the good things that are going on in Albuquerque Public Schools.

Five weeks.

That’s all that remains of this school year. And what a school year it has been.

Admittedly, I have been caught up lately with planning for next year, but not so much so that I haven’t noticed all the wonderful things happening this year, that happen every day in our classrooms, labs, schools, gyms, performing arts centers, community.

As I think about all the young children who learned to read this year, it brings back memories of when I was an elementary school teacher. I loved that light bulb moment when a student read his first word, her first sentence, their first book.

And then there’s all that problem solving going on – the hypotheses, calculations, experiments and so many more ah-ha moments.

Our campuses are buzzing with activity before, during and after school: rehearsals and concerts; practices and games; fundraisers and dress up days and community service and field trips and prom. There’s so much to celebrate, from victories to awards and honors to college admittance and scholarships.

And then, of course, the culmination of celebrations for all school districts – graduation, which happens for the Class of 2017 in a few short weeks. What an exciting time for our seniors and their families.

Our students, of course, are at the center of all these wonderful happenings, but they’re driven by caring, devoted adults – adults like you.

Albuquerque Public Schools is made up of so many talented individuals who chose professions dedicated to children and the future of our community. I often recognize,  rightfully so, our frontline employees – the teachers, educational assistants, principals and school support staff who go above and beyond to help our students succeed.

There are so many behind-the-scenes people in this district, too, who are making a difference, from those who make sure thousands of employees get paid every two weeks to the maintenance and operation guys who do everything from painting our walls to making sure the air condition is working to cleaning up after pigeons.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve been working a lot lately with the APS finance team that oversees a $1.3 billion budget. Talk about a challenging job!

Our Human Resource Department is gearing up to make sure we have qualified teachers in the classroom next school year.

Our Communications Office is posting important updates on the website and social media sites to keep parents and the community informed.

Our Foundation tonight is hosting a gala that celebrates our Selfless Seniors, some of our greatest contributors to the district, and some of our very successful programs that were funded through Foundation grants.

So many good happenings. So many more that will come in the next five weeks. Keep up the good work. We are all in this together
