Choice Fair

Superintendent Raquel Reedy extends an invitation to the annual APS School Choice Fair.

When I first started teaching, almost all of my students lived in the neighborhood, and for many of our students today, that’s still the case. But not for all.

More than 13,000 APS students attend a school outside their attendance area. I bet you know some of them. They’re in your class, they eat in your cafeteria, they seek your guidance, they need your support. These children are a part of your school family, even though their own family may live miles away.

Many factors contribute to the school choice each family makes. It may be the school closest to where a parent works (or in the case of many of our employees, the school where their parent works). It may be the school closest to their caretaker. It may be the school where their siblings or other family members go. It may be the school’s reputation, academic focus, size, or extracurricular offerings.

So many factors. Thank goodness we have so many schools for families to choose.

For the third straight year, we’ll showcase many of these schools at the APS School Choice Fair from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center. I appreciate all of you who will take part in this annual exhibition that helps families find the right fit for their children.

I encourage you to extend an invitation to anyone with a school-age child, or just an interest in public education. Dozens of our schools – elementary, middle, high and charter – will be represented.

I’d love to see you there, too. You might be surprised to see all we have to offer. You may not realize just how many different types of schools APS has these days. Some have specific areas of focus including dual language, STEM, fine arts, project-based learning, technology, academic rigor, career prep and much more. Others are more traditional with strong academics and talented, caring staffs.

Thanks once again to the city of Albuquerque, we’ll have lots of space at the Convention Center for the fair, where you can walk around, talk to principals, teachers and students and gather information about our schools and programs.

Limited parking is free for our guests and concessions will be available. Some of our students will be providing entertainment, too.

Spread the word. The Choice Fair is a great opportunity to show the community some of the good things that are happening in Albuquerque Public Schools.
