APS Superintendent to Lead Council of the Great City Schools
July 20, 2011
Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Winston Brooks has been chosen to lead the Council of the Great City Schools board of directors, which represents 65 urban school districts with a combined enrollment of some 7 million students.
The board of directors frequently meets with national education leaders including U.S. Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan to discuss education policy like common core standards and revisions to federal legislation such as the No Child Left Behind Act.
"Superintendent Winston Brooks brings to the leadership of the urban coalition a proven track record of successfully heading two Great City school districts - Wichita and Albuquerque," said Council Executive Director Michael Casserly. "He will be a strong and constructive force in leading the improvement of public education in our major cities and educating the nation's most diverse student body to the highest academic standards."
Brooks announced his election as chairman of the Council of the Great City Schools board of directors to APS Board of Education members during a special Board of Education meeting this week.
“I look forward to leading both the council and this district as we move forward during these trying times for public education in our nation,” Brooks said.
He noted that the Council of the Great City Schools is the only national organization exclusively representing the needs of urban public schools and its mission is to serve as an advocate for students through legislation, research and media relations.
APS will host the Council of the Great City Schools annual conference in 2013 in Albuquerque.
Brooks succeeds Dilafruz Williams of Oregon’s Portland Public Schools, as chair of the policymaking body of the national coalition representing many of the nation’s largest urban public school systems including New York and Los Angeles. The Council’s 128-member board is composed of the superintendent and a school board member from each of the districts.
Joining Brooks in his one-year term will be Candy Olson, a board member from Florida’s Hillsborough County School District in Tampa, who is now chair-elect, stepping up from the Council’s secretary-treasurer post and Eugene White, superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools, who was elected secretary-treasurer.
