A Principal's Guide to Learning Zones

Part 1

It’s encouraging to share that I believe Albuquerque Public Schools is in a really good place right now. Since we introduced the Learning Zones three months ago, we’ve made a lot of progress, and the enthusiasm seems to be contagious.

The Learning Zones, you may remember, is a new vertical approach to education in Albuquerque Public Schools. We’ve reorganized the district into four smaller, geographic learning zones to offer a more personalized approach to education and improve educational outcomes.

Our distinction as an urban-suburban-rural public-school district is unique and full of opportunities.

As we usher in a new month, I thought you might enjoy hearing first-hand how the Learning Zones are taking shape in our classrooms. Who better to provide that dialogue than our school leaders? Before the year is over, you will hear from four principals who each represent one zone, but together are Albuquerque Public Schools.

We begin in Zone 4, the northeast heights, where Troy Hughes serves as the associate superintendent. Kathy Casaus is the first-year principal of Bel Air Elementary. Roughly 325 pre-k through 5th grade students attend the Title One school built in 1952.
