Legislative Update - Tuesday, February 15
February 15, 2011
On Monday, Feb. 14, the House Education Committee unanimously endorsed a 1.2 percent reduction in the state equalization guarantee (SEG), the main source of funding for public education. That translates to a cut of about $7.2 million for APS. The budget deficit is within the range projected by the APS chief financial officer.
The funding proposal, detailed in House Bill 3, moved to the House Appropriations and Finance Committee, which began to hear testimony on Feb. 14. The committee may amend or change the bill as it is integrated into the state's budget, which is contained in House Bill 2.
The budget still has a long way to go through the legislative process, but this is the starting point for cuts to education. The APS Government Affairs Team will continue to closely monitor the budget and advocate for public education.
