14 Candidates File for Three Positions on Albuquerque Board of Education

Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver has certified 14 candidates to appear on the Feb. 1 ballot to fill three positions on the seven-member Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education.

Candidates certified for the position in District 1, which covers the South Valley, include incumbent Dolores Griego, who has served in the position for the past four years.  Also certified for the District 1 position are Phillip Chavez, Analee Maestas, Clara Peña and Jay Zook.

Candidates certified for the position in District 2, which includes the northwest area of the city, are John Herrera, Katherine Korte, Felix Nuñez, Peter Sanchez, and Greg Snyder. Incumbent District 2 board member Robert Lucero is not seeking re-election.

Candidates certified for the position in District 4, which includes the center of the city and the downtown area, are incumbent Martin Esquivel, who currently serves as president of the board; Candido Archuleta Jr.; Cheryl Harris; and Charles MacQuigg.

Three other people had filed to run, but were not certified by the county clerk.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 4, is the last day for new voters to register to participate in the Feb. 1 election, which will also include three positions on the Central New Mexico Community College Governing Board. For registration information, voters can call the Bernalillo County Clerk’s Office at 468-1291. More election information is also available on the county website at www.bernco.gov.

Early voting in the election will begin on Friday, Jan. 7, with polling sites open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, until Jan. 28. Early voting sites are:

  • APS Building at 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE
  • County Clerk’s Annex at 620 Lomas Blvd. NW
  • Coors Plaza at 3200 Coors Blvd. NW (Suite A)
  • BT Portable on the campus of CNM at 1401 Basehart Road SE
  • Rio Rancho City Hall at 3200 Civic Center Circle NE in Rio Rancho
