Welcome
Please enjoy Cochiti Elementary School's Six Trait Resources!
In our visual orientated society, we recommend using picture books and author studies with older students, also. Carol Hurst, children's literature consultant, says, "Picture books have an important role in every classroom. The wonderful combination of visual and textual story that picture books offer is a valuable literary experience. I use picture books to introduce themes or areas of study throughout the curriculum from the preschool level to high school."

Six Trait Definition
The Six Trait Writing Model helps students understand what is working well and what needs to be improved in their writing. The traits give teachers a focus for their writing instruction. The traits give all a common language for talking about and celebrating writing. The Six Trait model breaks down writing performance into a manageable group of teachable and assessable skills.
