Cochiti Developmental Preschool Program

The Cochiti Developmental Preschool Program is a 1/2 day preschool class especially designed to serve the needs of preschool students identified with developmental delays. The program consists of one teacher, one educational assistant, one speech and language pathologist, one occupational therapist, and one physical therapist. These professionals work as a team to assure that each child's needs are being met. Our program is an integral part of the Cochiti Community and is regularly serviced with PE, Library, and Music.

Some of the daily skills we work on in the classroom include basic skills, such as, color identification, shape identification, writing and cutting skills, literacy and listening skills, music and movement activities and counting skills.  We also work on appropriate social skills, such as, turn taking and sharing, treating others with respect and being polite.

There is a 2 hour and 45 minute AM class and a 2 hour and 45 minute PM class on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  On Wednesdays we meet for 1 ½ hours.  In order to qualify for this program, your child must be between 2.5 and 5 years old.  They must be tested and show delays in one or more of the following areas: Speech, Language or Communication; Fine Motor Skills (Occupational Therapy Needs); and or Gross Motor Skills (Physical Therapy Needs).

Each child who qualifies is offered transportation, on a school bus, to and from school.  If you have any concerns about your child, or any child in this age group that you know, you can contact Aztec Complex @ 298-6752.  Ask for the Pre-School Office and the operator will assist you.  At that time you can inquire about setting up testing and eligibility for your child for this program.

"Peer models" are an important part of the program and therefore are selected carefully to ensure success for everyone involved.  Peer models are children not identified as having a disability whom are selected to participate as a typical developing preschooler in our program.  Peer models exhibit very strong language, social and motor skills.  Peer models range from ages 3 ½ (by August 31) to 5 years old.  The reason we have peer models is because children that consistently demonstrate strong language, motor and social skills help provide peer interaction and social motivation for preschoolers with delays.

Peer models attend Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in either an AM or PM session but not both.  Wednesday is a short day for 1 ½ hours.  The cost is $40 per month paid to the Cochiti office or given in gift cards from local retailers.  Peer model placement can be terminated if the preschool program enrollment is reached and the class is full.  Another reason a placement can end is when concerns arise and cannot be resolved with assistance from parents and it is in the best interest of the entire program.  There is a 4 week trial period to help determine if the placement is a good fit.

Peer models are not enrolled as an APS student.  Parents are however required to complete registration documents for your child's concern and safety.  Shot records are also required.  To request for your child to be a peer model contact the Cochiti Preschool Program at 345-1432.  Please leave your name, your child's name, child's DOB, and any contact phone numbers.  Thank you for your interest in the Cochiti Developmental Preschool Program
