THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT BOOK CLUB
Several years ago we began a book club at Chamiza for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students, using the books on the reading list for the Land of Enchantment book award. Students may check out books from our school library or from the public library. Question sheets must be picked up from the school library. A discussion group meets during lunch every Wednesday, so participating students may ask questions or just come together and enjoy talking about the books they’re reading.
Any student who reads at least 3 of the books by the end of March will get to participate in the statewide voting for the favorite book in New Mexico. This award is rather special, because it is chosen by New Mexico’s students, rather than adults (who choose the recipients of most book awards). Any student you reads 10 or more Land of Enchantment books and completes the appropriate question sheets by the end of April will be invited to the end-of-the-year celebration.
The Land of Enchantment book club is easy to join! There is no sign-up needed. Interested students just read the books and complete the required question sheet. If a student wants to participate who has difficulty with the reading level of the book, they may have the book read to them by a parent or older sibling. A tally sheet shows each student how many books he/she has read.
