The Chamiza library is beginning a reading incentive program for students in kindergarten through second grade. We currently sponsor the Battle of the Books after school program (4th and 5th grades) and the Land of Enchantment Club for 3rd through 5th grades. Any student in kindergarten through 2nd grade may participate in the Caldecott club.
To participate a student must read (or have read to them) any book which has received the Caldecott award medal. We are including honor winners, also. Students will be taught how to locate Caldecott winners in Chamiza’s library. You can also find a list of winners by going to www.ala.org/alsc/caldecott.cfm
Students read a Caldecott award book and complete a response paper on each book. The response is expected to be thoughtful and neatly written and drawn. Our youngest students may dictate their response to a parent to write, but the drawing should be theirs. Parents may read the books to the students, if students cannot read them independently.
At the end of the year we will have a celebration for all students who read enough books to enter our Readers’ Hall of Fame. * Kindergarten must read 10 Caldecott winners
* First grade must read 15 Caldecott winners
* Second grade must read 20 Caldecott winners Not only will students read a variety of literature, but they will be introduced to diverse artistic styles. This can be a fun and enriching experience for the whole family!
