                 Cheating Policy

Cheating Policy

Cheating is defined as using someone else's work or answers (on daily work, projects, or tests) rather than your own.  Both the person copying answers and the person supplying answers will be considered as having cheated on work.  Students and parents need to be aware of the importance of academic honesty at JAMSA.  Academic honesty means not cheating, plagiarizing, or using information unethically in any way.

1.  All work will be collected and both parties will receive zeros on work, including tests.

2.  Students' accountability cards will document the incident.  The accountability card is to be signed by parents and returned to the teacher.  If the card is not returned, the student and teacher will contact his/her parent to explain the incident.

3.  Excessive incidents of cheating will result in an administrative referral.

Plagiarism includes:

bullet

Submitting someone else's work or ideas as your own, including that of tutors, internet sources, friends, parents or siblings, or paraphrasing without giving credit to the source.

bullet

You can use other people's ideas and even paraphrase or quote their words, but you MUST give them credit.  Use phrases such as "According to...," and "In the book..." and cite ALL of the sources you got information form in a bibliography.

Cheating Includes:

bullet

Copying assignments that are turned in as original work.

bullet

Trading assignments with other students.

bullet

Sharing answers before, during or after quizzes or tests.

Tips to help you avoid cheating:

bullet

Plan ahead, so you don't feel that you have to cheat to get a grade.

bullet

Be sure you understand the assignments.  Don't rely on your friends for information.

bullet

Don't give anyone your paper/work to "help them" even if you think they won't copy it.

bullet

Be responsible for you own work and make sure others cannot copy them.

bullet

Don't' read someone else's paper or homework before you do your own work.

bullet

Always cite your sources (tell where you got the information from).

bullet

If you're not sure if something you wrote is considered plagiarism/ cheating, ask your teacher/ librarian.
