Mrs. Martin, Mrs.
Armenta, and their friends would
like to help you learn about our library.
To learn more about our library, read more.
Our Library: A Grand Tour!
English Fiction (Non-AR)
Fiction books are labeled with the letter “F”
followed by the first three letters of the author’s last name, as seen below:
Fiction books are ordered alphabetically (ABC
order) by the author’s last name.
English Non-Fiction (Non-AR)
In our library, non-fiction
books are categorized and ordered by the Dewey Decimal system. Each book is
labeled with a corresponding decimal and then the first three letters of the
author’s last name (except for biographies, which are labeled by the number 921,
followed by the first three letters of the person who the biography is about),
as seen below.
The basic outline of the Dewey
Decimal system is as follows:
000’s: Computers,
bibliographies, general reference, and the occult
100’s: Philosophy
200’s: Religion (including
mythology)
300’s: Social Sciences
(including folklore – 398.2)
400’s: Languages
500’s: Sciences
600’s: Technology (including
pets, medicine, and cooking)
700’s: Arts & Recreation
800’s: Literature (especially
poetry & plays)
900’s: History & geography
(including biography – 921)

the Dewey Decimal system, click

Accelerated
Reader Section
Many of
the books in our library have sticker dots on them. These books belong to our
Accelerated Reader program. By reading these books and taking quizzes on them,
students may earn AR points. At the beginning of each year, students take a
test and determine their reading level. Students may then check out books that
correspond to their reading level by looking at the color of the dots on the
books. Each color of dot corresponds to a given reading level.
Reference
Room
These are snapshots of our reference room.
Our reference room has five kinds of books in
it.
1. Reference books
2. English Paperback fiction
3. Easy books
4. Read-aloud books
5. Story collections
Reference books
A reference book is a book with lots of
different information in it. Encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and atlases
are all reference books.
Reference books are marked by an “R”, the
Dewey Decimal number, and the first three letters of the author’s last name, as
seen below.
Reference books may NOT be checked out from
the library.
Paperback
English Fiction (Non-AR)
Paperback books are books
that can be bent. In other words, they do not have hard covers. While the
hardcover non-AR fiction books are in the main library, the paperback books are
in the Reference Room.
Paperback books are
marked by a “PB”, followed by an “F” and the first three letters of the author’s
last name, as seen below.
Easy books (Non-AR)
Easy books are short fiction stories for
students who are just learning to read or are just beginning to learn a new
language. Many easy books are in our AR section, but several are here, in the
reference room.
Easy books are marked by an “E”, followed by
the first three letters of the author’s last name, as seen below.
Read-Aloud Books
Read-aloud books are also
found in the Reference room. When a teacher wants to read a story to his or her
class, he or she comes into the reference room and checks out a read-aloud
book. These read-aloud books are AR books, and students can test on them. It
is important to note that these books can technically be any reading level.
Read-aloud books are marked with a dark purple
dot along the spine, as shown.
Only teachers may check out read-aloud books.
Story Collections
The
final type of book found in the reference room is a story collection. Story
collections are books with several compositions in them.
Story collections are
marked with an “SC”, followed by an “F”, and the first three letters of the
author’s last name, as shown.
Checkout Desk
When you are ready to check out a book, come
to the checkout desk, and either Mrs. Armenta or Mrs. Martin will help you check
a book out. You may only have two books out at a time, and at least one of the
books must be an AR book. Books are due in three weeks for students, but
teachers are allowed to have books for one whole month.
When you are done with a book, drop it into
the slot located on the side of the checkout desk. Make sure you bring your
books back in time, so that other students may use them!
Computer Area
On
these computers, you may do research on the Internet for your classes and type
papers for your classes. You may also search for a book using Accent book
search.
Only schoolwork may be done on the computers.
No free surfing, checking of e-mail, playing games, etc.
Using Accent
To search for a book in the John Adams
library, you need to use the Accent book search. Either follow the link above,
or type in the address 209.189.173.18 in your address bar. You may also follow
the desktop link if you are on a library computer (or if you have set it up on
your own computer).
If you have typed in the address from above,
you should see a screen that says “Welcome to Our Media Centers”. Go down and
click on “John
Adams
Middle School”.
By following this link (or by following the
link from above or from the desktop), you should see a search bar. You may use
this bar to search by book title, book subject, or book author. Select what
category you want to search under. Then type what you want to search for, and
click on the button marked “search”. A list of books matching your search
criteria will appear. Write down the book names and call numbers, and look for
the books on the shelf.
If you are not exactly sure what you want to
search for, you can also use a broad-category visual search. Just click on
where it says “visual search”. Images with categories will then appear. Click
on the category and image that best contains the information you are looking
for. When you do this, images with more specific sub-categories will appear.
Continue until you have a list of books containing information you want to know
about.
Remember, if you have any problems finding a
book on the shelves, ask Mrs. Armenta or Mrs. Martin to help you.
